We believe that the majority of us, who are by definition unexceptional humans, have the potential for excellence.
The Endowment for Unexceptional Humans has two explicit purposes: the first is to provide financial and community support, through scholarships and the web, to individuals who wish to further their education for a good reason and who have a solid plan for academic success, and to provide financial and community support, through grants and the web, to groups who have good ideas and reasonable plans for shepherding their ideas, products, or organizations to fruition.
The second purpose of The Endowment for Unexceptional Humans is to combat the American ideal of rugged individualism and the myth that we live in a meritocracy. We do this by focusing on an individual or group's plan for the future and their ability to demonstrate their perseverance, resilience, support and character.
We do not provide merit scholarships. There are plenty of merit scholarships in the world, and those who qualify them are mostly exceptional enough that they need little help on their path to success. Rather, we provide funding and support for the rest of us --those who for whatever reason have enormous potential but not, so far, the ability to always make others see this. These scholarships and grants are designed for people and groups who can demonstrate a gap between their potential and their past performance, and who have a plan for closing that gap. One needs not already have demonstrated extraordinary skill and merit in order to go on to achieve excellence in one's chosen field.
We believe that everyone deserves a chance, but that opportunity alone cannot ensure success. The past is only interesting to us insomuch as understanding it can help all of us move forward to do well and do good. It is the future that is really exciting. The trick is to be able to shape one's own future and the future of the world, rather than simply being shaped by it.
